The Year 2007 in Review

2007 was an eventful year for the Australian Electricity market. We saw
record exchange traded volumes and also record price action with major
price rises seen in all states, most notably in Queensland.

Over the last 12 months the d-cypha SFE Electricity Futures and Options
products traded over 136,000 contracts representing over 290 million MWh,
a rise of 188% on the previous calendar year. Face value of traded volume
grew to over $16 billion and open interest peaked above 42,000 contracts.
Annual exchange traded volume exceeded 149% of the underlying NEM system
demand.

It was a record breaking year for prices too which saw Calendar 2008
prices for all states increase between 39% (SA) and 179% (QLD) by mid
year. By the end of December prices had retreated from the mid-year highs
but still remain between 52% (NSW) and 92% (QLD) above end 2006 levels.

December 2007 also saw some market enhancements. The ASX made several
procedural changes including increasing the Block Trade Threshold and
modifying the settlement procedures. Additionally, all strip trade price
allocations are now automatically determined by the SFE using a consistent
algorithm, increasing trade processing efficiency. As a result, for our
Data Centre subscribers, d-cyphaTrade have released an Online Strip Price
Calculator which may assist with (indicative) post trade
price allocations. For a demonstration please contact a member of the
